University fails to teach us a lot, one thing it doesn’t prepare us for are the times where we let a patient refuse treatment even if it means death, because that is THEIR choice. Obviously you do everything you can to get this patient to accept help & luckily refusing treatment in a life and death situation is rare in healthcare but I made this post to shed light on the fact that it does happen. If you are ever faced with a difficult decision like this it is important to involve as many people as possible, doctors, family and friends of the patient. Call for many professional opinions to ensure that the patient truly has capacity to understand the gravity of the situation and their decision. At the end of the day we can never force someone to do something they don’t want to do, freedom of choice prevails.
