The Battle of Mosul, was a major battle fought between Iraqi Government Forces, as well as a coalition of allies, and the Islamic State (ISIL), with the goal of retaking the city, having been captured by ISIL in June 2014, and being a major stronghold for the organisation, acting as a springboard for them to take over large swaths of territory in Iraq and neighbouring Syria. The battle, fought between the 16th of October 2016, and July 9th 2017, was mainly fought by Iraqi forces, the coalition understanding the moral victory of having Iraqi troops liberate the city, remained mainly in supporting roles. What followed was months of brutal urban combat, ISIL forces had dug in and entrenched themselves, awaiting the arrival of enemy forces, however their support from the populace was near non-existent, stemming from years of brutal oppression, including executions of anyone deemed not loyal. This in turn led to the gradual whittling down of their forces. Until on July 9th, 2017, the Iraqi Prime Minister personally travelled to the war-torn city to declare victory in Mosul. November 3rd, 2016, 12:00 hours. The fighting on the approach to the city has been a rapid advance, ISIL forces have put up little resistance on the forward positions and flanks of the city, however recent fighting has shown why, the enemy is well dug in and despite being outnumbered nearly 10 to 1, they are highly motivated. They have been launching guerilla attacks and ambushes against vehicle convoys moving into the city, causing massive casualties, they have routinely used civilians as cover, as well as IEDs, and booby trapping dead members.
