Cup semi-final drama in the Mansfield Sunday League as the league’s top two sides went head-to-head in the Stamper Cup semi-final, FC Skegby vs Shirebrook Miners Welfare at Racecourse Park, home of Skegby. With the league’s current top two battling for a place in the final, this one had big-game tension written all over it. Before kick-off I spoke with Shirebrook manager Kane about the importance of today’s match and what it would mean for his side to reach the final. With both teams flying high in the league, this felt like a potential preview of a huge rivalry. On the pitch, the strong wind made things difficult for both teams early on. Chances were limited and it took a set piece to break the deadlock. A free kick from halfway was delivered into the box, flicked on, and a completely free Shirebrook player was waiting at the back post to head home! 0-1 to Shirebrook. With the wind now in their favour, Shirebrook started to take control of the game but couldn’t quite find the second goal before the break. Half-time: 0-1. The home side pushed forward relentlessly in search of an equaliser and in the 90th minute the moment arrived. A long throw into the box was flicked on and then headed into the net! 2-2! Absolute scenes and one Skegby player celebrated right in front of the Shirebrook captain! With nothing separating the teams after full-time, it all came down to penalties. Skegby scored. Shirebrook scored. Skegby missed. Shirebrook scored. Skegby had one saved. Shirebrook scored again. Skegby had to score… SAVED!
