TUH have announced completion of their first robot assisted surgery with the patient discharged home. The Robotic assisted surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System enables surgeons to perform complex minimally invasive surgical procedures with precision and accuracy. The Tallaght University Hospital Foundation (TUHF) have been instrumental in securing funding for this technology arriving at TUH recently. The robot has been named ‘Leona’ by staff. When major surgery is carried out with Leona, it means smaller incisions, less pain, reduced blood loss and a quicker recovery time for the patient. TUH has a strong tradition of developing minimally invasive surgical techniques and pioneering Irish short stay and day case minimally invasive surgery, particularly in the areas of Urology, General Surgery and Orthopaedics. Initially Leona will be used primarily by the busy Urology service at TUH, with Colorectal Surgery and Gynaecology also using the new robotic system in time.
