Let's hack the CachyOS Installer! CachyOS just shipped a fresh 2026 ISO, so I installed it for one main reason: a turnkey Arch-like setup with Snapper BTRFS snapshots you can actually boot into. And it almost nails it. On the first reboot I did the “whole point of snapshots” test—boot into a snapshot—and instantly hit a warning at the KDE login stage: Plasma couldn’t write to a stateful config directory. It looks like the install is broken… but it’s not. It’s a read-only snapshot layout gotcha. In this video, I break down: What’s actually happening when you boot a read-only root snapshot Why KDE’s login stack complains (and which directories must stay writable) The clean fix (both for new installs and post-install systems) The distro-level tweak that would make snapshot booting feel truly seamless (subvolume split like an @plasmalogin idea vs. the “sledgehammer” option of carving out all of /var) If you care about bootable rollbacks that remain usable after a bad update, this is the kind of edge case you want to know before you need it. If this saves you from reinstalling, hit Like/Subscribe—and comment what desktop environment you’re running on CachyOS (and whether you’ve hit the same snapshot boot edge case).
