In this episode I focus on the Arab Republic of Egypt! Join this channel to see videos early, and get ad-free videos: / @geofocuschannel Egypt lies at the geographical center of the Arab World, with territory in both North Africa and Western Asia (ie. the Middle East). The Suez Canal divides the African part of Egypt from the Sinai Peninsula which is in Asia. It also arguably lies at the cultural center of the Arab World, with Egyptian cinema, television, and music being among the most popular in Arabic-speaking countries. As an Arab country, the official language of Egypt is Arabic. People speak Egyptian dialect in their daily lives, but learn Modern Standard Arabic at school and use it for reading, writing, and formal communication. The total area of Egypt is 1,010,408 km², making it the 30th largest country in the world. Arguably its most important feature is the Nile River, which flows 1600 km south to north. 99% of the population lives along the Nile River and on the Nile River Delta, on around 5% of the country's land. That's some pretty asymmetric population density! Most of the rest of Egypt is desert: The Western Desert, also known as the Libyan Desert, which covers 2/3 of the country; and the Eastern Desert, which is bordered by the Red Sea to the east. Both of these deserts are part of the Sahara Desert which extends across Africa. One of the most beautiful things in Egypt is the oases that punctuate these harsh deserts, like Siwa Oasis in northwestern Egypt. Then there's the rocky and hilly Sinai Peninsula. Its highest mountain (St. Catherine) rises to an elevation of 2,642 meters. Nearby there is Mount Sinai, where Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments from God. Alexandria, which is located on the Mediterranean Coast, is Egypt's second largest city. Its largest city is Cairo which sits at the southern edge of the Nile Delta. It's one of the world's megacities with over 20 million people living in the metro area. Nearby Giza is where the great Giza Pyramids are located. As most people know, Egypt was also a tremendously important in ancient times, and the pyramids are just one of many, many ancient sites of historical importance in Egypt. / geofocus_channel / geographyfocus / geofocuschannel Main Music: Desert City by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...)
