Witness says Caucasian man wanted to brawl, 'all hell broke loose'

A witness who saw the so-called “Downtown Brawl” in July in Cincinnati offered a new perspective on the ordeal. Local 12 spoke with a man who was there shooting video three weeks ago, as a late Friday night turned to an early Saturday morning at 4th and Elm. Many Cincinnatians have seen video of what happened, but few people have come forward to talk about what they saw and what they recorded—until now. Marvin C. Bennett has a business creating videos. He was on 4th and Elm at about 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, when he noticed a tall, white man trying to start a fight with a group of Black men outside the bar "Love on 4th." "He kept saying the n-word, and he was saying, like, 'Come on, I'll take all y'all.' He was telling 'em, calling 'em out like, 'Come on, I'll take all y'all.' Squaring up, like he wanted to fight. And they kept saying, 'Man, we ain't gonna hit you, man. You're old But Bennett says the man persisted and kicked a car owned by one of the African American men. "So that's when the dude we were talking to went over there and was like, 'Man, what's up?! You kick my cars? I ain't got nothing to do with what's going on with y'all over there.' That's when he slapped him—and when he slapped him, all hell broke loose." The beatdown that followed has been widely seen on social media and the news. "It seems like any one of these people—Black, white, whatever—could have stopped and walked the other way at any point," Local 12 said. "I agree with that," Bennett said. "I agree with you on that—well, before or after the slap?" "Either, you know what, you slap me, I'm gonna walk away—turn the other cheek—isn't that what they say?" Local 12 said. "Yeah, I don't know," Bennett said. "Like where I'm from, ain't nobody, ain't nobody doing that, man. I'm just gonna be honest with you. Like, ain't nobody doing that, man. Like, I done see people get shot for less." "A lot of people are saying the racial tension in this town is off the charts," Local 12 said. "Yeah, like if you look in the comments, man, you really see how people feel," Bennett replied. "Like, I'm saying it's a lot of hatred towards Black people, man. Somewhere, somebody must; they might want, like, a racial war or something." "How do we make all this better?" Local 12 said. "Do what we doing now—get the truth out," Bennett said. "Let everybody get they day in court. No matter what color they is, you know. I'm saying you did something wrong, and you need to be charged. We need to be held accountable just like everybody else and just go from there. Like try to just do better as a people, man." Bennett said he thinks there was a disproportionate response to that slap. He also said he does not think the woman who was knocked out deserved what she got. But he said there should be equal justice, and the Caucasian man he saw start the fight should be held accountable as well. At this point, seven African Americans have been charged for the incident.
