O Praise the Lord by George Walker Nathaniel Barnett, conductor George Walker (1922-2018) was a leading composer of the 20th century and the first African American person to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Though primarily known for his orchestral and chamber writing, he wrote many works for voice and choir, including his Mass, his Cantata, and many motet-like pieces for unaccompanied choir. “O Praise the Lord,” one of Walker’s many religious choral works, is a festive setting of text from Psalm 117. The piece, in three sections, opens and closes with declarative, even forceful writing, offering a song of praise to God. The interior section, set for soloists in counterpoint, reflects on the mercy and enduring truth of the Lord.
