In a quest to find as many options for gardening as possible, I've come upon Growstones. Growstones are a replacement for perlite. Perlite is a mined volcanic rock which is super heated and then expanded by 10 to 20 times the original volume. In horticulture, perlite is very commonly used, especially in soilless potting mixes. But is perlite "sustainable"? Is the use of perlite good for the environment? Many gardeners have asked that question. Some have decided they want to avoid perlite. Being sustainable is a lot easier to do when we are given more eco-friendly alternatives. Fortunately, we have options... like Growstones! Growstones are made from 100% recycled glass. So these are a renewable resource. They are better for the environment because they keep glass out of land fills. Growstones won't crush into powder light perlite. And they are structurally resilient, allowing them to be reused again and again! But Growstones aren't just good for the environment. They're good for your plants too! The water retention and capillary properties keep your plants moist. But the excellent aeration factor provides oxygen for healthy roots, preventing root rot. And as a nice bonus, they even slowly release soluble silicon (Si) over time. Silicon reinforces cell walls in plants, resulting in more resilient plants. I contacted Growstone and asked if they would send me a sample for testing and review. Well they went above and beyond, sending FOUR samples from their product line up! These samples will allow me to test them with seedlings in self-watering, sub-irrigated planters. Plus I'll be able to use them in a Kratky hydroponics test.
