Situated in the northwestern county of Cheshire in England is the Roman city of Chester. It was founded as a "castrum" (Roman fort) in the year 79 AD under Emperor Vespasian, and was known as "Deva Victrix". The Roman army abandoned the city by the early 5th century, and later on it became part of the Kingdom of Mercia. In the 11th century it came under Norman rule when William the Conqueror ordered the building of Chester Castle. Perhaps the most immediately striking aspect of the city is its architecture. Along the four main streets featured in the video (Bridge Street, Northgate Street, Eastgate Street and Watergate Street) are what are known as the Chester Rows. These are elevated walkways on the first floors of the buildings, allowing you to navigate a good portion of the aforementioned streets above ground level. They are believed to have originated in the 13th century, although in some cases the upper floors were built or restored later on. The result is a mixture of medieval, tudor and 19th century architecture, with a high concentration of Grade I listed buildings. Another distinctive feature of Chester is its city walls. These are perhaps the most well preserved Roman city walls in England (on a par with York). As you can see from the video anyone visiting Chester is free to walk the walls in order to navigate the city centre. Interestingly they also allow you to look straight onto Chester Racecourse, which is recognised as the oldest racecourse still in operation today. It was established in 1539 under the decree of the Mayor of Chester, Henry Gee (which is where the term "gee-gees", meaning racehorses, comes from!) 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
