Coronavirus: Anti-lockdown protesters clash with police in London's Trafalgar Square

Violence erupted on Saturday as police moved to shut down an anti-lockdown protest that drew thousands to London's Trafalgar Square. Protesters say they are upset over new, tougher coronavirus restrictions imposed earlier in the week by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as England increases its efforts to stop the spread of the virus. Police told local media that protesters were ignoring COVID-19 restrictions and “putting people in danger of transmitting the virus.” The Office for National Statistics said Friday that new cases in England had shot up to around 9.600 per day in the week leading up to Sept. 19, up from 6,000 the previous week.
