King Abdulaziz Airport Highlights & the Famous Fish Tank King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) in Jeddah is the main gateway for pilgrims heading to Makkah and Madinah. Inside the new Terminal 1, you’ll find a spectacular 14-meter-tall, 10-meter-wide fish tank holding 1 million liters of Red Sea water, home to over 2,000 marine creatures across 65 species. It’s the largest of its kind in an airport and a calming focal point as you arrive. Getting from Jeddah Airport to Makkah Uber / Taxi (Car) Distance: about 75–96 km, taking 1–1.5 hours depending on traffic. Taxi rank location: after exiting customs into the Arrivals Hall of Terminal 1, follow the “Ground Transportation / Taxi” signs. The official taxi rank is located just outside the Arrivals Hall on the ground floor, next to the car rental counters and ride-hailing pick-up points. Uber / Careem: ride-hailing apps are fully operational from JED, with designated pick-up bays near the same ground transportation area. Haramain High-Speed Train The Haramain High-Speed Railway connects Jeddah Airport with Makkah in just under 1 hour. Station access: directly linked to Terminal 1’s Transport Hub, a short walk via signage. Speed: up to 300 km/h, cost around SAR 40–50, a reliable and modern option especially in busy Hajj/Umrah seasons. Mobile Connectivity: Buying a SIM Where: STC, Mobily, and Zain kiosks are located in the Arrivals Hall near the exit toward the transport hub, close to the aquarium. Bundles (STC Tourist SIM): 1 GB / 7 days ≈ SAR 40–60 3 GB / 14 days ≈ SAR 80–100 5 GB / 30 days ≈ SAR 120–140 Tip: STC has the widest coverage; eSIMs can also be purchased online before arrival for instant activation. Summary: Arrive at JED, admire the aquarium, head downstairs to the ground floor taxi rank outside Arrivals if you’re catching a cab or Uber, or follow the signs to the Haramain Train Station for a faster ride. Grab an STC SIM card on the way out to stay connected.
