With each passing decade since the Second World War, the memories of ordinary families caught in its upheavals risk fading. "The Dolls We Left Behind: A Child’s Wartime Journey from Poland to Persia", published by Siostry Krajewskie Press, is a remarkable memoir by the late Eugenia Marta Krajewska (1928–2010). It vividly recalls her childhood in pre-war Mołodeczno – then part of Poland – and the trauma of deportation to a Siberian labour camp. The description of life in the Soviet gulag and the journey across the Soviet Union following Stalin's granting of 'amnesty' to Poles violently seized from their homes by NKVD militia are remarkably detailed and are based on Eugenia's diary written in Persia after the family's eventual arrival there in 1942. At the book launch at POSK Polish Cultural Centre in London, we were joined by families of survivors of Kresy deportations, historians of Polish migration, and friends who shared their own family stories. The video recording of the book launch presentations captures both the historical context of the deportations and Eugenia’s deeply personal story. With readings from the book, photographs, and maps, it offers profound insights into this traumatic chapter of Polish history. "The Dolls We Left Behind" is available in hardback and PDF editions from Siostry Krajewskie Press: https://www.siostrykrajewskie.com as well as through Amazon.
