This video is a year-by-year timeline showing the terms of office for the British Prime Minister and the Japanese Leader. Japan's political foundation is rooted in the UK model, adopting a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary cabinet system, further cemented by close ties between their Imperial and Royal Families. On November 22, 2025, at the G20 summit held in South Africa, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and British Prime Minister Kia Starmer held their first face-to-face summit. At the meeting, we confirmed that the two countries will work closely together in the security and economic fields, and exchanged views on the tense situation in Ukraine 🇬🇧🇯🇵 Chapter: 0:00 1721 - 1868 2:28 1868 - 1914 3:15 1914 - 1945 3:45 1945 - 1989 4:30 1989 - 2025 Note: This explanation traces the evolution of Japan's highest government post and its de facto leaders during the early Meiji period (1868 - 1885) in chronological order. When the new Meiji government was inaugurated in 1868, the highest post was Chief Official, held by the Imperial family member Prince Taruhito Arisugawa, a nominal supreme position symbolizing the Emperor's centrality. However, later that year, under the Sanshoku (Three Posts) system which abolished the Chief Official post, the Assistant Official was created. The leading court nobles Sanetomi Sanjo and Tomomi Iwakura were appointed to this post, becoming the de facto heads of the government. From 1869 to 1871, due to a governmental reform, Sanetomi Sanjo became Right Minister, the second highest post in the Daijōkan (Council of State). As the higher post of Left Minister was vacant, Sanetomi nominally functioned as the head of the Daijōkan. However, actual political decisions were made by a collective leadership of Councilors like Toshimichi Okubo and Takayoshi Kido. Subsequently, from 1871 to 1885, Sanetomi Sanjo continuously held the nominal supreme post of Chief Minister. However, after 1873, the post of Home Minister (first held by Toshimichi Okubo) assumed general administrative control and held the de facto political power. Therefore, in this video, the Home Minister is displayed centrally as the de facto Prime Minister, while the nominal supreme leader, Chief Minister Sanetomi Sanjo, is noted in the lower left. The Home Minister was the actual highest executive authority, comparable to the British Prime Minister, until the official Japanese Prime Minister was instituted in 1885. Thank you for watching!
