Free Virtual Talk: The Beauty of the Venetian Renaissance

The Renaissance in Venice had unique characteristics when compared to other cities during this time period. The Republic of Venice was geographically separated from other city-states of Renaissance Italy. Venice was strong culturally, economically, and politically. Thus, it had the leisure to pursue the pleasure and benefits of cultivating great art. It also was the center of book publishing in Italy. While Venice was the focus of this artistic development, other smaller cities such as Padua, Brescia, and Verona also contributed to the greatness of the Venetian School. Some of the artists from this region, who became major forces in European art, were Giovanni Bellini, his brother Gentile Bellini, and the painters who participated in their workshops such as Giorgione, Titian, and Paolo Veronese. These artists used a freer brushstroke, rough weave canvas, harmonious colors, oily pigments, and rich modeling and shading.
