This was one of three songs I was commissioned to write by the Natural History Museum in London as part of the Campsite residency in October 2012. I spoke to three researchers at the Museum, each with a specialism in a different sort of insect, and wrote a song based on each person's research. In this case, the researcher was Beulah Garner, curator of coleoptera (beetles), who explained to me the process of allocating a "type specimen" for every species on Earth, and allowed me the privilege of "meeting" some of the (dead) type specimen beetles at the Museum. This song is sung from the point of view of one such beetle, specifically the 'Chrysina optima' type. The song was performed to animations created in Flash in a bell tent beside the Darwin Centre, at the Natural History Museum in London, between October and November 2012. Another song in this series can be found at • 'The Stridulating Psyllid' - a song by Joh... . More information about my work is at www.whoisjohnhinton.com
