India’s environmental protection system was shaped by one of the world’s worst industrial disasters the Bhopal Gas Tragedy. In this episode of the IPCA Sustainability Podcast, host Ashish Jain sits down with Sanchita Jindal to explore how this tragic event changed the direction of India’s environmental governance. On the night of 2–3 December 1984, toxic methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, exposing more than 500,000 people and causing thousands of deaths, making it the world’s worst industrial disaster. The tragedy exposed serious gaps in India’s environmental regulations and eventually led to the creation of the Environment Protection Act 1986, a landmark law that established a comprehensive framework for environmental protection, pollution control, and regulation of hazardous industries in India. Through this discussion, we explore how environmental policies evolve after major disasters and what India must do today to strengthen environmental governance. 🎙 In this episode we discuss: • The history and impact of the Bhopal Gas Disaster • Why India needed stronger environmental laws • The creation of the Environment Protection Act (1986) • How environmental governance works in India • Waste management challenges and sustainable solutions • The role of government, industry, and citizens in protecting the environment Whether you're a policymaker, sustainability professional, student, entrepreneur, or someone concerned about India’s environmental future, this episode offers deep insights into how environmental policies are shaped and why they matter. If you care about air pollution, waste management, environmental laws, sustainability, and India’s environmental future, this conversation is essential.
