Celox Gauze is a hemostatic dressing designed to rapidly control catastrophic external bleeding, especially in trauma settings. It is impregnated with chitosan, a naturally derived biopolymer that promotes rapid clot formation by interacting with red blood cells and platelets independent of the body's normal clotting cascade. Unlike agents that rely on the coagulation system, Celox remains effective in hypothermic and coagulopathic patients — common conditions in pre-hospital trauma. It is non-exothermic, making it safe for deep or cavity wounds. Celox Gauze is FDA-cleared and extensively used in military, prehospital, and emergency surgical care worldwide. It is recommended in guidelines such as TCCC (Tactical Combat Casualty Care) for junctional and non-compressible haemorrhages where tourniquets cannot be applied. Application involves wound packing with firm pressure for 3–5 minutes, after which the material can remain in place during transport.
