The City of North Bend is sharing factual information about a proposed Public Safety Fee measure expected on the May 19, 2026 ballot. The proposal would increase the current fee from $15 to $20 per month. The Public Safety Fee helps support police services and emergency response operations in our community. Residents may remember a similar proposal in 2025. That measure did not take effect because the prior City Charter required approval by a majority of all registered voters. In that same election, voters approved a charter amendment changing that requirement. The City is now revisiting the proposal under the updated charter language. North Bend, like many communities, is facing rising costs for personnel, healthcare, retirement, utilities, and insurance. Over the last five years, inflation and service costs have risen 23.5%, while revenue growth has not kept pace. Public safety, including police and fire, represents about 71% of General Fund spending. The City also secured a federal COPS Hiring Grant to help fund a narcotics-focused officer position during an initial three-year period. That grant covers only part of the cost, and the City would be responsible for full funding after the grant period ends. This post is intended to provide factual information only. The City may not use public resources to advocate for or against a ballot measure.
