来島海峡大橋は，本州四国連絡橋の尾道・今治ルートを構成する橋の1つで，大島と今治の間約4kmの来島海峡に架かる総延長4.1kmの3つの吊橋(来島海峡第一大橋，来島海峡第二大橋，来島海峡第三大橋)の総称です。来島海峡は昔から鳴門海峡，関門海峡と並んで海の難所として有名です。狭い海域に複雑な地形が作る潮の流れは速く，複雑に変化しており，最大潮流速は10ノット(秒速約5m)にも達します。しかし，瀬戸内海の中央海域へ行き来する船舶には、ここは避けられない航路であり，海上交通安全法に指定される航路です。 このため，来島海峡大橋の橋梁計画にあたっては，中渡島をはじめとする島々などの自然環境の保全，船舶航行の安全性，車両の走行性などを考慮し，共有アンカレイジを2基設けて3つの吊橋を直線的につなぐ世界初の三連吊橋が採用されました。1999年5月供用開始です。 来島海峡第一大橋：吊橋（橋長960m，中央支間長600m） 来島海峡第二大橋：吊橋（橋長1,515m，中央支間長1,020m） 来島海峡第三大橋：吊橋（橋長1,570m，中央支間長1,030m） (本州四国連絡高速道路株式会社のHPより引用しました) The Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge is one of the bridges that make up the Honshu-Shikoku bridges on the Onomichi-Imabari route. The Kurushima Strait has long been known as a dangerous place along with the Naruto Strait and the Kanmon Strait. Tidal currents created by complex topography in a narrow sea area are fast and change in a complex manner, and the maximum tidal current speed reaches 10 knots (approximately 5 m/sec). However, this is an unavoidable route for ships traveling to and from the central waters of the Seto Inland Sea, and it is a route designated by the Maritime Traffic Safety Law. For this reason, when planning the Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge, we took into consideration the preservation of the natural environment of Nakatoshima and other islands, the safety of ship navigation, and the drivability of vehicles. The world's first triple suspension bridge, which connects suspension bridges in a straight line, was adopted. Service started in May 1999.
