Is Alicante worth visiting? Or is it just the airport for Benidorm and the Costa Blanca? I spent time exploring this Spanish city to find out... I wanted to discover if Alicante is a genuinely great Spanish destination hiding in plain sight, or just a transport hub. In this video, I'm exploring solo to find out what to do in Alicante and whether you should skip it or stay. My first impressions were dominated by the surprisingly grand Passeig Esplanada de España, a stunning marble promenade, and beautiful, peaceful squares like Plaça Gabriel Miró. This area, with grand buildings like Casa Carbonell, gives the city a confident, regal feel. To understand the city, you MUST visit the Castell de Santa Bàrbera. I took the lift (Ascensor) up Mount Benacantil for the most incredible views, which really tell the story of Alicante's boom alongside resorts like Benidorm. But the real character is in the Casco Historico (Old Town). I explored the steep, charming streets of the Santa Cruz neighbourhood, like the colourful Calle San Rafael, and found the incredible Mercat Central d'Alacant – a buzzing, authentic local market that is a must-see. Alicante isn't just old-world charm. I visited the brilliant MACA (Museum of Contemporary Art), discovered a modern coffee scene (at places like Swallow and Madness), and learned about the massive Hogueras de San Juan festival, which shows the city's vibrant identity. And what about the beaches? I checked out the convenient Platja del Postiguet, but my top tip is to take the excellent Alicante tram just 20 minutes to the massive, beautiful San Juan Playa. It's well worth the trip. So, what's the verdict? This video gives my honest take on whether Alicante is worth a visit for a city break and what you absolutely must do here in 2025.
