👁️ Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) — NCLEX Breakdown You NEED to Know 1️⃣ Viral Conjunctivitis • Patho: Inflammation caused by a virus (often adenovirus) • Key signs: Watery discharge, redness, burning, gritty feeling • Often follows a URI or cold symptoms • Treatment: Supportive care only (cool compresses, artificial tears) 🧠 NCLEX tip: Antibiotics are NOT indicated 2️⃣ Bacterial Conjunctivitis • Patho: Bacterial infection of the conjunctiva • Key signs: Thick purulent discharge, eyelids stuck shut in the morning • Usually unilateral at first • Treatment: Antibiotic eye drops/ointment 🧠 NCLEX tip: Yellow/green discharge = bacteria 3️⃣ Allergic Conjunctivitis • Patho: IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reaction • Key signs: INTENSE ITCHING, watery discharge, bilateral redness • Often seasonal or with known allergens • Treatment: Antihistamines, mast-cell stabilizers 🧠 NCLEX tip: If itching is the main complaint → pick allergies 4️⃣ Chemical / Irritant Conjunctivitis • Patho: Inflammation from chemical exposure (cleaners, smoke, chlorine) • Key signs: Burning, redness, tearing, pain • Priority intervention: Immediate irrigation with saline or water 🧠 NCLEX tip: Always choose flush the eye first ✨ NCLEX Pattern Recognition • Itching = Allergic • Thick pus = Bacterial • Watery + cold symptoms = Viral • Exposure history = Chemical → irrigate Save this for your exam review 📚👀
