PDC WEBINAR held on 17 September, 2022 Learn more about the Peninsular Democratic Coalition (PDC) at https://peninsulademocrats.com The upcoming midterm elections likely have many of us worried about the state of our democracy. Now more than ever, we see that democracy is not a spectator sport; it requires each of us to protect and nurture it. With this in mind, the PDC is very pleased to have well-respected political sociologist, Dr. Larry Diamond, discuss the state of our democracy and how we can preserve it. As Dr. Diamond stated in his book, The Spirit of Democracy: The Struggle to Build Free Societies Throughout the World, "for democratic structures to endure – and be worthy of endurance – they must listen to their citizens' voices, engage their participation, tolerate their protests, protect their freedoms, and respond to their needs." We could not agree more with Dr. Diamond! Q&A was moderated by Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian. Larry Diamond is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) at Stanford University, and also a Professor teaching at Stanford University. Larry Diamond is a noted speaker and leading contemporary scholar in the field of democracy studies, and has served as an advisor to numerous governmental and international organizations. His latest book, “Ill Winds: Saving Democracy from Russian Rage, Chinese Ambition, and American Complacency”, analyzes the challenges confronting liberal democracy in the United States and around the world at this potential “hinge in history,” and offers an agenda for strengthening and defending democracy at home and abroad.
