Isaak Berkovich - Variations in D minor (1961)

Berkovich (1902-1972) was an Ukrainian composer and teacher. Graduated from Kiev Conservatoire in 1925 where he studied piano with Pukhalsky, and composition with Lyatoshinsky. From 1922-52 taught piano at a number of music schools in Kiev, Bukhara and Samarkand. From 1952 as associate professor, and from 1969, as professor at the Kiev Conservatoire. Berkovich left a prolific and valuable legacy in music specifically aimed at childen and younger people. And this work is a good example. It is a useful and effective composition for the young pianist. There are several things which are studied in this work if you want to play it good. For example to learn to really distinguish subtly between "p" and "mf" and not play everything at the same volume. To use the pedal not over a written rest symbol in the left hand. To play phrasings precisely as they are written. To develop a feeling for short musical phrases and to play towards the end of each phrase. To get acquainted with chromatic falling basslines (obviously very important for ukrainian music...) Then of course the last variations are good for technical exercise, not very easy at all. However they are very effective, it reminds me of Mendelssohn Variations serieuses or Beethoven Op.77 Fantasia where similar variations appear. the score is on pianophilia http://www.pianophilia.com/phpBB3/vie...
