Bands have many variables that effect their lifespan. Sand, dirt, and foreign objects, as well as the species of logs being milled, all play a part in how long a blade will last. Metal, rocks, and other foreign objects are obviously the quickest way to ruin a blade, but dirty or sandy logs can dull a blade in one or two cuts. A dull band heats up more and stretches, making it necessary to slow the feed rate in order to get a flat cut. The more heat stress a blade has experienced, the less flex life it will have, meaning it will be subject to cracks sooner. Harder, denser species dull the blade faster than their softer counterparts. Species with flaky bark, like shag bark hickory and some conifers, are more abrasive to blades, because they hold invisible grains of dirt in the bark. We use Wood-Mizer Double Hard 1-1/4" .045 bands with either a 7 or 10 degree hook.
