⚠️Buying outdoor gear is easy. Learning real skills takes time. In this ruck walk talk, I reflect on something many of us in the outdoor and bushcraft community experience at some point: the temptation to solve problems with gear instead of developing the skills that actually matter. Over time I’ve learned that gear can support skill, but it can also create illusions of preparedness if we rely on it too much. ⚠️During this walk I talk through nine ideas that have shaped how I think about gear and skill in the outdoors: 1. Fear 2. The false sense of security gear can create 3. Ego and pride in our abilities 4. Staying teachable 5. Age and the reality of time 6. Stripping down your kit 7. Testing your gear in real conditions 8. The role of comfort gear 9. Finding what actually works for you ⚠️These are lessons I’ve picked up through experience, mistakes, and time spent outdoors. None of this is about rejecting gear — good tools absolutely matter — but about remembering that skill and mindset are what really make the difference. ✅Ruck talks are a chance for me to think out loud about lessons learned in the field, the balance between gear and skill, and how systems evolve over time. Question for viewers: What outdoor skill do you think people should focus on learning instead of trying to solve with more gear? 0:00 Intro 2:05 1. Fear 6:12 2.
