Directed by Alexander Robertson. The story: Not long after my parents were married, Mum fell pregnant, and they were very excited. However, the week after they found out, Dad had a massive stroke from a bleed in his brain. He was only 29 years old. Unconscious for 10 days and given a very low chance of survival, he eventually stabilised and was sent home to wait for his body to heal and the clot to dissipate. On the trip home from the hospital Mum was driving at half the speed limit, but Dad says that it still felt like everything was rushing by. When he got home he slept all the time, couldn’t remember names or words, and would forget where the bathroom was. Though the weeks passed, he failed to improve. After a month of this, Dad had an appointment for a CAT scan at what was then the only machine in Canberra. The scan showed a golf-ball-sized blood clot at the stroke site putting pressure on his brain, which it turned out hadn’t stopped bleeding. He was booked in for neurosurgery but had to wait 2 weeks. They went to stay with Mum’s family in Wollongong while they waited. While they were there, amid the toughest time of their lives, Mum had a miscarriage at 19 weeks. She was taken to Wollongong Hospital. She had to be discharged early in order to drive Dad back to Canberra to have brain surgery, which left Mum at home grieving her baby and unsure whether Dad would survive. This was their lowest point.
