VERNON’S ELEVATOR / EL ASCENSOR DE VERNON. Gabi Pareras.

"The Elevator" (Devil's Elevator by Dai Vernon and Bruce Cervon) is a beautiful trick that accompanied Gabi throughout his entire magical life. His very refined personal version is full of details that especially seek the maximum economy of movement without loss of clarity and maximum clarity without loss of economy of movement (a constant in all of Gabi's magic). To our knowledge, Gabi developed at least three variations of this same trick: The first one follows the line of the original trick, although adding handling, subtleties and details which makes the trick much more economical, subtle and clear. The second one is a curious version where the red cards are inserted and rise with the black cards fanned out. Gabi said that he found this version unsettling because you could see the "entry point" and the "exit point" at the same time. In addition, he experimented with displays based on the "Background and Shape" principle of Gestalt Psychology. Finally, the third version is the return to the first one with a different ending to rise the five. At the beginning of the trick, Gabi sometimes used the Biddle steal (but he preferred the merhod from the first and second version) and the relevant thing is that he adds a new and exquisite ending, which in a trick with cumulative effects like this one, achieves an extra potency, where apparently there was no space to fit anything else. We would have loved to include a video of Gabi performing the last version but we don’t own any recordings oh him doing it, so we have to film it ourselves. We don’t have his hands but we did it with the greatest respect. In Gabi’s hands the rising of the five from this third version was a thing of beauty, and in addition it’s an idea which deserves to be known. He used to say that “inside the humblest magic trick, the whole art of magic can be contained”. Su muy refinada versión personal está plagada de detalles que especialmente buscan la máxima economía de movimientos sin merma claridad y la máxima claridad sin merma de economía de movimientos (una constante en toda la magia de Gabi). Que sepamos, Gabi desarrolló al menos tres variaciones del mismo juego: La primera sigue la línea del juego original, aunque añadiendo manejos, sutilezas y detalles que vuelven al juego mucho más económico, sutil y claro. La segunda, es una curiosa versión donde la carta que va a subir se inserta y sube teniendo las cartas negras abiertas en abanico. Gabi decía que esta versión le parecía inquietante por que se podía ver el «punto de entrada» y el «punto de salida» al mismo tiempo. Además, le sirvió para experimentar con enseñadas basadas en el principio de «Fondo y Figura» de la Psicología de la Gestalt. Por último, la tercera versión es el regreso y vuelta de tuerca a la primera versión. Al inicio del juego Gabi a veces usaba el robo Biddle (pero prefería la carga de la carta negra de la primera versión) y lo relevante es que añade un nuevo y exquisito final que, en un juego de efecto acumulativo como este, lo dota de un extra de potencia mágica debido a la claridad de las condiciones expuestas para la subida final del Cinco. Nos hubiera encantado incluir un video de Gabi haciendo esta última versión pero no tenemos ninguna grabación donde salga presentándola. Así que tuvimos que filmarla nosotros mismos. No tenemos ni las manos ni el talento de Gabi pero lo hicimos con el mayor de los respetos. En manos de Gabi la subida del cinco de esta tercera versión era una belleza, además de una idea inédita que merece ser conocida. Cuando Gabi exponía este juego en conferencia era toda una lección de magia (¡con él cualquier cosa era una lección de magia!) contenida en uno de los juegos más humildes de nuestro arte.
