Funny enough, I finished this piece just before the pandemic hit, and I don’t remember much about the process of writing this piece. I should have written a program note when it was more fresh, but the performance was delayed by many months and I guess I simply didn’t feel the need to put my thoughts into words. I do remember, though, that I worked with a few small modules of ideas. These ideas focus on different techniques and textures that are available on the marimba; and yet, all of them bring out the rather intimate quality of the instrument. Then I had some sort of logic according to which these modules behaved. It was based on some commonly-used compositional techniques such as inversion, but also concepts and feelings that just made sense to me. Overall, the words I would use to describe the piece are fleeting, winged, conscious, organic, and sensitive. Revisiting the piece after a while, I feel that the piece has very much taken its own meanings, and that the logic or the process behind it is just a thing of the past. I guess that is usually how it goes with music; but with this piece, I can’t help but think that it was its fate to be forgotten, and remembered in new ways. Lastly, I’ll share an excerpt from a poem that the title is based on. It’s from 문병, written by 박준 (Joon Park): 아무것에도 익숙해지지 않아야 울지 않을 수 있다 해서 수면은 새의 발자국을 기억하지 않는다 Huge thanks to Ji Su Jung for commissioning this piece and playing it so beautifully! PERFORMANCE HISTORY » This piece was performed by Ji Su Jung and premiered in April 2021 on the New Music New Haven concert series.
