Born in Oświęcim, Poland, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under Jan Stanisławski and Józef Mehoffer. In 1908, he moved to Paris, where he was exposed to the avant-garde movements of the time, including the works of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, which greatly influenced his artistic development. Makowski’s early works displayed a Post-Impressionist style, but by the 1910s, he began experimenting with Cubism, incorporating geometric forms and simplifying figures. However, his art retained a lyrical and poetic quality, often inspired by rural life and childhood innocence. His fascination with flowers and nature is evident in works such as Field Flowers (1916) and Bouquet in a Green Flower-Vase (1916), where he captures vibrant colors and delicate compositions. In the 1920s, Makowski developed a distinctive style that merged his Cubist background with folk motifs, creating charming depictions of children, village scenes, and still lifes. His floral paintings, including Irises in a White Flower-Vase (1920) and Zinnias and Asters in a Glass Jar (1920), reflect his sensitivity to color and form. His later works, such as Flowers in a Clay Flower-Vase (1932), showcase his matured technique, emphasizing texture and warmth. Despite spending most of his career in France, Makowski remained deeply connected to Polish artistic traditions. His paintings, often nostalgic and filled with a dreamlike atmosphere, continue to be celebrated for their distinctive charm and emotional depth. Today, his works are housed in major Polish museums, preserving his legacy as one of Poland’s most beloved modern artists.
