I had no idea, but dragonfruits have a couple crazy secrets - they only take one year to grow - and it all happens on just one night in the summer on the cactus plant. Plus, they can bear fruit for up to 30 years, so commitment here was worth it. Of course I had to find out if this was true, so 2 years ago I got my hands dirty with 3 purple dragonfruits, 2 yellow dragonfruits, 2 cactus pears, and cactus pear pad. I wanted to see if I could grow 1000 baby dragonfruits in my own home. And by the way, if you didn’t know, pollinators of dragonfruit cacti are nocturnal creatures like bats and moths. What happens is, the cactus plants that dragonfruits grow on flower in just one year, then the fruit grows out of those flowers on just one evening per summer when the bats and moths come to drink the delicious pollen from the flowers. Those nocturnal creatures transfer this pollen from flower to flower. Then the fruits pop out after that one night the flowers get pollinated. And they can even live in pots indoors, but those can take 2-3 years to bear fruit. BTW - if you’re growing dragonfruit and want an easier way to extract the seeds for germination, just cut a piece of fruit and dab it on a paper towel. The seeds will come right off, and then you can shpritz that with water, fold it up, and seal it in a little bag or glass jar and wait for the tails to grow!
