Lucas Greenwood “It’s hard to quit when you’re making $20,000 a day!” - Paul Phua Poker

New to Paul Phua Poker, Lucas Greenwood is a Canadian poker pro with ten years’ experience and $1.5m in live tournament earnings. He has a keen understanding of poker strategy, and has had a particularly good year: in 2017 he won his first major trophy, taking down the $25,000 PokerStars Championship High Roller in the Bahamas in January for almost $800,000. He added cashes of $87,464 in Monte-Carlo in April and $196,256 in Barcelona in August. https://www.paulphuapoker.com/lucas-g... When did you start playing poker? Lucas Greenwood: I started playing poker online in my last year of High School. My older brother was in university and playing a lot and making a decent amount of money doing it and, you know, when you’re 17, 18 years old you can’t really get very many jobs outside of working in retail or working in a bar or something like that. So I just started pursuing it and all throughout college was making enough money that l didn’t need another job. And now, ten years later, here l am, and… yeah! What first attracted you to poker? Lucas Greenwood: Getting into it, you know, l played sports as a kid, but l was never a good enough athlete to do that professionally, and l always sort of had a good brain for math and strategy and thinking things through. And there was definitely an element of my older brother’s friends and him were doing it, and l think when you’re of that age you’re very impressionable to your older peers. And it’s fun and l enjoyed it, and then also it’s very difficult, you know, when you’re 18 years old and you make a few thousand dollars, or 10, 20 thousand dollars or something in a day, to be, like, “Oh, I’m going to quit this and find something else to do.” I think that’s… as much as l do enjoy playing the game just for the sake of playing it and trying to do as well as l can even if for no money, obviously winning money is as good a motivation to continue doing it as anything. What are your greatest moments in poker? Lucas Greenwood: Probably January this year, when l won the PCA $25K High Roller. Yeah, so that was my first trophy and that was a pretty big moment for me and my biggest cash, and… l try to pretend, like, l would think, “oh, it’s just about the money”, but then actually getting the trophy and the title and everything was a much cooler experience than l thought. And now l’m just hungry to keep getting more titles. What advice would you give your younger self? Lucas Greenwood: l would say don’t be arrogant, and be more responsible. As much as l could talk about poker strategy, a lot of that stuff you just need to put in the hours to learn. But if you’ve been around the poker world for a while you see a lot of really talented players who are struggling to make ends meet, and l think that’s not necessarily because of their game, because, you know, you’re gambling for a living and there are a lot of pitfalls in the gambling world. And l think l’ve avoided most of them, but there are a lot of things l look back at there where l go, if l were just a little more dedicated and responsible and business-like about the way l handled things l’d be in a better situation than l am now. But the flip side of that is, l think that’s just life, and sometimes you need to make mistakes to learn from them. What advice would you give to beginners? Lucas Greenwood: Have consistent bet sizing. I think a lot of people switch up their bet sizing based on what hand they have and it’s kind of obvious, when you’re playing against good players who can figure it out. My second advice just in general would probably be most beginners play too many hands and you should probably tighten up a bit. And my third piece of advice would be, you’ve got to plan hands: very often there are multiple streets, and you’ve got to set things up for multiple streets and not just be thinking one step at a time. And along those lines, you also need to be willing to bluff. If you’re not going to bluff you’re not going to be able to win, and sometimes that means getting caught with your pants around your legs! But sometimes you’ve just got to go for it. For more videos with Lucas Greenwood visit:    • Ask the pros: How to spot visual poker tel...      • Ask the poker pros: Do you have a lucky ha...
