One of the most enjoyable times to be out in the vines is during winter season. It is quiet, cool to cold which you can dress for, but deceptively one of the busier times of year. Pruning season dominates winter work, where art and science are constantly balancing with each other. Spare pruned or Cane pruned vines require different approaches by skilled technicians to insure proper crop performance for the coming vintage. The Grenache vines at the Coop are Spare Pruned and in a Goblet head pruned system. Early in year, after the leaves fall off, they are pre pruned to remove most brush cuttings while leaving 12-15 inches of cane wood still attached. This protects for fungal infections that can harm vine over years. By late Feb, now, the final pruning cut is made to the two bud norm. This means you count two buds up from the basal growth area of that previous year cane. This Grenache is used in the King Andrews's Six Pac blend. The cane wood of 2019, last season, is healthy and robust. Many Suisun Valley vines are Spare pruned, mokre commonly on trellis wire, and the new growth is reduced to one cane with just two buds at each spar position. Each bud produces a new cane and most often two new grape clusters per cane to be harvested.
