Shivrak Chanyache Tonak | How to make Goan white peas curry | Chanya Ros Allergy: Contains Coconut. Serves: 10 Ingredients: Vatana/White peas - 1 & 1/3rd cup, dry Tomato - 1 small, chopped ( Optional ) Potato - 1 small, chopped Cilantro/Dhaniya - A small bunch, chopped Tamarind - 1 small piece ( Use a little more if not using tomatoes ) Jaggery Powder - 1 teaspoon ( This is optional too, but enhances the taste in a no onion dish ) Salt - to taste ( About 1.5 teaspoon ) Water - As needed For the ground masala: Oil - 1 teaspoon Coriander seeds - 3 tablespoons Lavang/Cloves - 5 Peppercorn/Mirya - 8 Cinnamon/Tikhi - 1 inch sized skinny piece Mustards seeds - 1/4th teaspoon ( Optional but really gives good aroma ) Red Chillies - 4-5 Freshly grated coconut - 1 cup ( Thaw if using frozen fresh ) Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon For Tadka: Oil - 2 teaspoons Hing - 1 small piece Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon Kadipatta - 4-5 Method: 1) Wash Vatana and soak in enough water for 6-8 hours, max overnight. 2) Pressure cook vatana with potatoes and tomato ( if using ) with salt. Set aside until pressure drops naturally. 3) Refer to 'For the ground masala'. Heat oil. Roast coriander seeds, Lavang, Mirya and Tikhi until a nice aroma is let out. Add mustard seeds and chillies. Toast for a few seconds. Transfer to a plate. 4) In the same pan, toast coconut well. Switch off flame and add turmeric powder. Mix well. Set aside to cool. 5) Grind toasted spices, coconut, tamarind, jaggery Powder, salt with water to a paste. 6) Add ground masala paste to boiled peas. Adjust consistency of water and seasoning. Let it come to a boil. Switch off flame. Add Dhaniya. 7) Do Tadka and pour over prepared curry. Note: White peas can get mushy pretty quickly during the cooking process. So either soak for 5-8 hours and get done with 2 Whistles or if soaked for long period, just pressure cook for 1 whistle. If you want intact shape and no splitting at all, cook for 1 whistle.
