SEGASonic Arcade's a bit of an odd one in Sonic's illustrious past through the 90s; mostly due to the fact it's never been ported. It shares this feat with Knuckles Chaotix! Thankfully, there's always emulators, but one issue with this route is the same issue that Yuji Naka himself cited as the reason it never got put on Sonic Gems Collection: the controls. SEGASonic Arcade used a Trackball for movement; rolling the ball moved your character (of which there were three, Sonic, Mighty (who showed up in Knuckles Chaotix, ironically) and Ray (whose only other appearances in the games were cameos, including one in the SEGA Saturn game Gale Racer) in that direction, surprise surprise. This was apparently a pain in the dick to get working with a traditional analogue stick, and so even with emulation pretty much everybody who has played this game has had to use a Trackball for it. However, whilst trying (and failing) to get Rad Mobile's (Sonic's first ever appearance ironically) steering wheel controls to, well, not be shit, the analogue settings in MAME made me think if they could be manipulated within SEGASonic Arcade. Unsurprisingly they could, and within 5 minutes I'd done what SEGA apparently couldn't: made SEGASonic Arcade playable with an analogue stick on a normal gamepad. Sort of. It's far from perfect, which is to be expected, but alas. In particular, jumping it a pain in the arse: the second-to-last level, Wild Waterway, is still basically impossible to complete without dying many times due to the imprecise nature of the jumping mechanics in the game, and the analogue stick. If the control feels otherwise odd, just go into MAME's analogue control settings on the ingame menu (TAB by default) and turn down the sensitivity, and POSSIBLY the digital speed. It's a case of experimentation, honestly. In fact, since recording this I found a setting that seems to work slightly better, particularly on Wild Waterway. Give it a go. ANYWAY, here's that damn (fourth chaos emerald) link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eZXG... Have fun folks, and Happy New Year!
