KATARÍNA SMOLEÑOVÁ Simulating development and growth of plants using functional-structural plant modelling Functional-structural plant (FSP) models, or virtual plants, combine the 3D architecture of plants (structure) with selected physiological processes (function) that drive plant growth. These models can simulate plant responses to environmental factors and management interventions and are particularly useful in cases where plant architecture plays a critical role. In this talk, using the example of a tomato plant, I will introduce the main concepts behind FSP models, including how the L-system formalism is used to describe plant development using rewriting rules. Building on this background knowledge, I will present some recent applications in horticulture, from using FSP models to study the effect of architectural traits on light interception to their role in decision support in digital-twin applications. For the latter, I will show how the plant model can be synchronised with a real-world crop using data from climate sensors and imaging data from high-throughput phenotyping. Synchronisation of plant architecture between the real and virtual crop will be illustrated for plant height adjustments, by calibrating model components using Bayesian optimisation.
