This is the fourth video in our Indigenous Mental Health series, as voiced by Jasmine Peterson, a Psychologist Associate at Sullivan + Associates Clinical Psychology and a woman of Indigenous descent. In this video, we will discuss the impact of alcohol and substance use on Indigenous communities. Based on survey research of those living in reserve, around 75% of respondents reported that they felt alcohol was a problem in their community. While there are many negative perceptions about Indigenous people and substance use, data consistently shows that Indigenous people actually have lower substance use rates. There has been a trend in data that shows that those who do use tend to use more heavily rather than recreationally compared to the general population. Because substance abuse tends to coincide with other mental health conditions (depression, anxiety, trauma, etc.), it then makes sense why some Indigenous people who use substances go on to experience substance use issues. If you or someone you know struggles with addiction, there is help, and there is hope. Today's video will focus on providing important education about addictions and strategies to help overcome this issue.
