Abstract: The Lovász Local Lemma (LLL) is a fundamental result in probability theory, used to prove the existence of mathematical objects via the probabilistic method, with applications in many areas including routing and scheduling, hash functions, and integer programming. Relatively recently, the LLL has also been shown to have a central role in the complexity theory of distributed algorithms, in which in problems must be solved collaboratively by processors represented as nodes in a communication graph. Distributed algorithms for the constructive LLL can act as meta-algorithms to solve a range of other distributed graph problems. In this talk, we will survey the background of the distributed LLL, and discuss some recent advances in distributed LLL algorithms and their implications. Part of the LMS Computer Science Colloquium 2024, which took place on 10 December 2024 at De Morgan House, London and online via Zoom. The LMS Computer Science Colloquium is an annual event, which includes themed talks on a topical issue at the interface of mathematics and computer science. The theme of the 2024 Colloquium was 'Trends in Algorithm Design' ========== The London Mathematical Society has, since 1865, been the UK's learned society for the advancement, dissemination and promotion of mathematical knowledge. Our mission is to advance mathematics through our members and the broader scientific community worldwide.
