The Ethiopian Wolf (Canis simensis) is one of the world’s rarest and most endangered canids, found only in the Ethiopian Highlands at elevations above 3,000 meters. Known for its slender body, long legs, and reddish coat, this wolf is uniquely adapted to the cold, open grasslands of Africa’s “Roof of the World.” Unlike most wolves, the Ethiopian Wolf is a solitary hunter, specializing in catching small rodents such as giant mole rats and grass rats. However, they still live in tight family groups, defending territories together and raising pups as a pack. Sadly, fewer than 500 individuals remain in the wild. Their survival is threatened by disease outbreaks from domestic dogs (like rabies and canine distemper) and habitat loss due to expanding human settlements and agriculture. Despite these challenges, the Ethiopian Wolf remains a symbol of resilience and beauty, a reminder of Africa’s rich biodiversity and the urgent need to protect its fragile ecosystems.
