Kings Cross has always been an example of the changing face of Sydney. Once a bohemian hub, then a red-light district, then the heart of Sydney’s wild nightlife, it has never stayed the same for long. These days, things are relatively quiet. The lockout laws of the 2010s put an end to the all-night chaos, though some argue they just pushed the trouble into other suburbs. What’s left now is something in between—a mix of lingering neon, gentrified cafes, and the ghosts of a wilder past. However, Kings Cross has fought against change before now. In the 1970s, when developers were eyeing off Victoria Street for demolition and high-rise redevelopment, the New South Wales Builders Labourers Federation (NSWBLF) stepped in. The Green Bans movement, led by the NSWBLF and local residents, stopped bulldozers in their tracks, preserving much of the area’s historic character. Without it, Kings Cross could have been just another stretch of concrete towers. There’s even a plaque for Mick Fowler at the top of the stairs on Victoria Street—one of the many people who put themselves on the line to stop the destruction. Now, as Kings Cross shifts once again, the question of heritage versus progress is still relevant. The wild nightlife might be gone, but does that mean the Cross has lost its soul? History isn’t just about old buildings—it’s about the communities and culture growing within them. No amount of redevelopment can recreate the decades of stories that have unfolded here. Kings Cross is still evolving, just as it always has, but the layers of history remain, waiting for those who know where to look. I'll meet you at the Coke sign!!
