History and Culture of Ogun State

Ogun State is a state in South-western Nigeria. It borders Lagos State to the South, Oyo and Osun states to the North, Ondo State to the east and the republic of Benin to the west. It has 20 Local government areas and has important cities and towns such as Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, Sagamu, Ikenne Remo, Ilaro, Ijebu-Igbo, Aiyetoro etc and has Abeokuta as it's capital and largest city, with the population of approximately 3.75 million people. The major language spoken in the state is Yoruba. Ogun State covers a land area of 16,762 square kilometres. It is covered predominantly by tropical rain forest and has wooded savanna in the northwest. The state also houses many large factories in the country like, Coleman Cables, Procter and Gamble, Dangote Cement and others. Am sure that might not really interest you.... Now lets get to the origin of Ogun state. The territory that is now known as Ogun State goes back to around 1830. During that time, the great Oyo Empire was falling apart and people were trying to get away. One brave leader and hunter by the name of Shodeke led his people which were known as Egba refugees to the land, which has since become Abeokuta, roughly the central part of the today’s Ogun State. Most of the inhabitants of Ogun state are members of the Egba and Egbado subgroups of the Yoruba people. Ogun State became an actual state on February 3rd 1976. Created by Gen Olusegun Obasanjo and Gen Murtala Mohammed during the Nigerian Military era Before, the land which it occupies today was a part of the Western State. The state is named after the Ogun River, which flows through it from its northern part all the way through to the southern part and enters into Lagos State. Ogun State is rather diverse in terms of ethnic groups. There are about six main ethnic groups . These groups are Awori, Egba, Egbado, Egun, Ijebu and Remo. Most of them speak Yoruba, but with their added regional flare. The people of Ogun State are known for their batik called Adire. The Ijebus in the state were the first Yoruba speaking people to have contact with the Europeans in the early 14th century. They were the first Yorubas to have invented money made from cowry shells called ‘Owo Eyo’, which was accepted throughout the kingdom of Yorubaland but was later replaced by legal tender coins made from silver materials called ‘Pandora’ when the Europeans came. The Ijebu Empire exists to this day with the capital in Ijebu-Ode. The state has several large and beautiful festivals and celebrations. These are Ita Oba day, Ojude Oba festival , Ake Festival and Yewa Festival both take place in November. The Modern Abeokuta is an agricultural trade centre (rice, yams, cassava , corn [maize], palm oil and kernels, cotton , fruits, vegetables, shea butter, and rubber) and an exporting point for cocoa, palm produce, fruits, and kola nuts. Rice and cotton were introduced by the missionaries in the 1850s, and cotton weaving and dyeing are now traditional crafts of the town. Now the exciting part... The Food.. One of the meals the indigenous of Ogun state don't joke with is 'Lafun' (white amala) gotten from cassava and ewedu , Apart from the famous 'Garri Ijebu', Ijebu Ode is known for its Ifokore/Ikokore porridge made from water yam it's one food to try when in the area. They also have this delicious meal Ofada rice, Abeokuta Ofada rice wrapped in a green leave decorating the rice with a peppery stew and assorted meat, shoko, shaki, pomo or with Liver is one of the best yet eaten anywhere.. Roasted boli and groundnut, or maybe the ones served with red oil or pepper stew and many other delicious delicacies. A lot of famous Nigerians come from Ogun State. We will not list them all, as that would take all day. However, most notable ones are Olusegun Obasanjo, Obafemi Awolowo, Mike Adenuga, Late Fela Kuti, Late MKO Abiola and many other influential people. Ogun State is filled with tourist attractions. One of the most famous is the shrine of Bilikisu Sungbo in the village of Oke-Eri, Ijebu-Ode. A lot of Muslims from every corner of the Earth come to the shrine to pay homage to the legendary Muslim. It is said that it had supernatural powers, and even after death, it still has them. Other interesting places are: Olumo Rock in Abeokuta, Yemoji Natural Swimming Pool at Ijebu-Ode, Oyan Dam in Abeokuta North, Iwopin Boat Regatta and Ebute-Oni in Ogun Waterside.... #SplendourJohn #OgunState. #History culture, queen of sheba history, ogun state tourist attraction, miss ogun state, ogun state, miss culture, ogun state (administrative division),poorest state in nigeria, african history, imo state, yoruba history, queen of sheba and solomon, best state in nigeria, lagos state, top 10 richest states in nigeria, state in nigeria,10 richest states in nigeria, states in nigeria, richest states in nigeria 2019,most richest states in nigeria, queen of sheba tomb, queen of katwe, queen of sheba death.
