Various high angle shots of right-wing demonstration STORYLINE At least five thousand anti-Nazi protesters headed toward a square in central Berlin on Sunday to demonstrate against a planned march by the far-right. Carrying banners denouncing Nazism, some with swastikas with a big black bar through them, the demonstrators were surrounded by large numbers of police. The anti-Nazi demonstrators gathered near Friedrichstrasse train station and marched through the centre of the city toward the central Alexanderplatz Square, where right-wing protesters were assembling. About three thousand supporters of a German extreme-right party rallied to protest the "cult of guilt" they say was imposed on the nation after the Nazis' defeat 60 years ago. Many of the extreme rightists wore all-black and sported shaven heads. Some carried flags in red, white and black - the colours used by the Nazis and imperial Germany. German Interior Minister Otto Schily called the rally a "disgrace". National Democratic Party supporters were ringed by riot police on the square and after several hours gave up plans to also march through downtown Berlin, a police spokesman said. Police sealed off much of downtown Berlin to prevent clashes and protect the landmark Brandenburg Gate, where mainstream political leaders and about 10-thousand spectators attended a "Day of Democracy" celebration with music and speeches. Officials had refused the far-right permission to march to the Brandenburg Gate and Germany's new Holocaust memorial under a new law banning gatherings that insult the memory of Nazi victims.
