Our new home in Okayama! Though we discovered it through AkiyaMart, this wasn’t an "akiya" in the way most foreigners understand the term—it was never truly abandoned. The previous owner, who lived to the remarkable age of 102, left the house to her son, who then decided to sell it. Prior to the sale, the family visited regularly, ensuring the home remained well cared for and free from deterioration. Set on approximately 3.5 acres of land, much of which consists of hatake (vegetable fields) and tanbo (rice fields), the house was in excellent, livable condition. However, a few immediate upgrades were in order. Built in Meiji 33 (1900), it still had its original "knob and tube" wiring, which was first on our list to replace. Fortunately, the previous owner left behind several useful items, including a washing machine and refrigerator, making our transition smoother. For added convenience, we installed a gas water heater and a gas dryer. I tested our water, from the tap its about as perfect as it can get, and from the well its nearly identical, though would need boiled. While no urgent repairs are needed, we have plans for thoughtful renovations. Our priority is replacing the roof on the building with the oldest tiles, followed by restoring the engawa flooring in the two structures separate from the main house. We are also eager to restore the beautiful Japanese garden. In the long run, we envision transforming the bathroom into an open-concept, onsen-style retreat, blending tradition with comfort. Funny enough, with all the video I recorded, somehow missed the kitchen. It is nice and functional, could use a new unit kitchen but I think we will just wait and redo it with something more permanent. #古民家 #kominka #空き家再生 #akiya #岡山 #田舎暮らし #okayama #takebe #meiji
