In this 91st episode of the Big Bull Series, we speak with Vikas, a trader who has built his journey in the markets through patience, discipline, and a strong focus on systematic trading and risk management. Vikas entered the stock market soon after the 2008 financial crisis, a time when markets were full of uncertainty and most investors were hesitant to participate. Instead of staying away, that period sparked his curiosity. He wanted to understand how markets really function beneath the noise. Coming from an MBA background with experience across corporate roles, advisory, manufacturing, and real estate, he already had a practical understanding of how businesses operate. That perspective eventually shaped the way he analyzes stocks and trading opportunities. Today, with more than a decade of experience in equity delivery and swing trading, and five years in options trading, Vikas focuses on consistency rather than chasing aggressive returns. He currently manages around ₹2 crore in trading capital and targets steady monthly returns with disciplined capital management. Many people enter the markets looking for shortcuts or quick profits. But long-term survival in trading usually comes down to discipline, risk management, and psychological stability. This conversation explores what it actually takes to stay in the market for years. Vikas talks openly about how market cycles shaped his thinking, how he balances business responsibilities with trading, and why he believes capital protection is the first rule of trading. For traders who want a realistic view of systematic trading, this discussion offers practical insights that go beyond surface-level strategies. What We Discuss In This Episode? • How Vikas’s career across different industries influenced his approach to markets • His journey from self-learning through YouTube and trial-and-error to developing structured strategies • The difference between option buying and option selling from a risk perspective • How traders should think about capital allocation and drawdown control • The role of market psychology and emotional discipline • Real experiences of losses and lessons learned from them His Trading Approach 1. Equity Trading - Vikas primarily focuses on equity swing trading rather than intraday activity. He looks for stocks where volume expansion and price breakouts signal momentum. Positions are typically held for days or weeks, allowing him to capture larger moves while avoiding unnecessary noise. Delivery holdings also allow him to pledge shares and utilize capital more efficiently when needed. 2. Options Trading - Around five years ago, he expanded into options trading, mainly to improve returns and manage risk. His approach is largely discretionary and market-condition driven, using strategies such as straddles and strangles depending on volatility and direction. 3. Layered Options Strategy - One interesting method he uses involves combining longer-expiry options with shorter-term trades. Long-term options provide directional exposure and protection, while shorter-term positions help generate premium income and hedge risk. This layered structure allows him to stay active in the market while keeping losses controlled.
