When John Norton was seven years old, he was stricken with a case of strep throat so severe, he had to be rushed to St. Joseph’s hospital in the middle of the night for an emergency tracheotomy. John never forgot that night, and has felt grateful for the care ever since. “Everyone at St. Joe’s treated me like family,” he said. “It’s the best care I’ve ever had,” says John. “Our kids were born there. Our grandkids were born there. It’s our family hospital.” Over the years, John and his wife, Doris, have shown their gratitude and support for St. Joseph’s in many ways. In 2006, they gifted $1 million for the creation of an outdoor sanctuary called the John and Doris Norton Healing Garden. In 2011, the couple contributed $4 million to establish the Doris Norton Scholars program. And in 2012, they donated another $1.3 million to renovate a building on the St. Joseph’s-Creighton campus. “We are blessed to be able to help the hospital and its foundations,” says Doris, who has been a member of the Barrow Women’s Board since 1988. This year, they set a donation record with a $19 million gift to St. Joseph’s Foundation that will ensure continued growth for the hospital’s thriving thoracic services. “It’s a remarkable story with that family, and I believe they are grateful patients, but more than that, they are part of us, “ said Patty White, president and CEO of St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. “The Norton gift is transformational. It will allow us to do things that we wouldn’t have been able to do without this gift.” “I feel like whatever I do for St. Joseph’s is really for the community as a whole and I could not put my money in a better place,” John explains. “St. Joseph’s can do wonderful things if it has the financial ability to do it. But advances in medical science are very expensive and it takes a lot of capital to do the things you’d like to do.” “With this gift we are able to put this project into motion, but our gift is just the beginning,” says John. “We have planted the seed and now invite the community to become actively involved in growing this center into a world-class institute.“
