Dr. Neha James of our Manhattan, New York location talks about chronic pelvic pain syndrome in females, what causes it, and how it can be treated at Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr. Neha P. James, DO is a trained physiatrist who is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. As a PM&R physician with a strong background in helping patients overcome the physical after-effects of illness and injury, Dr. James takes an approach to treatment that places the utmost emphasis on compassion, communication, and patient education. She has considerable knowledge and expertise on treating pelvic pain conditions and aiding recovery from a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries and medical events. Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine, our pelvic pain specialists provide a functional, rehab approach to pelvic pain. When you visit one of our offices, you spend an hour with your doctor reviewing in detail your medical history and symptoms. Then, we perform an internal exam (no speculum) to evaluate your nerves and muscles. Together, we'll discuss an individual treatment plan that gets to the root cause of your pain and helps you to feel better. The best part: you can begin treatment the same day! At PRM, our mission is to decrease the time patients are suffering from pelvic pain symptoms. The causes of Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome in women are really related to the anatomy in the region. So, you can have pain complaints related to the GI tract, such as pain with defecation, or difficulty straining to get a bowel movement, pain with urination, dribbling, or difficulty completing your stream, and also pain with the gynecologic system. So, especially in patients who have underlying gynecologic diseases, such as endometriosis, PCOS, or uterine fibroids. There are also lifestyle factors that can be involved, such as a sedentary lifestyle, or certain activities that create a lot of tension and holding within the pelvic floor. We also treat Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome in the postpartum population after both C-sections and vaginal deliveries. It's always important to rule out structural issues, such as fibroids or cysts, and of course, we want to rule out the really scary things like malignancy or cancer, but a lot of the time we find that the pain is actually coming from the pelvic floor itself. At Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine, our treatment protocol includes physical therapy, medication management, either with oral medications, or sometimes with suppositories, as well as behavioral management. So, especially incorporating mindfulness to provide a source of stress relief, and then when indicated, we do procedures as well, such as trigger points, or nerve block procedures.
