The #VietnamWar was a lengthy, expensive, and controversial battle that pitted North Vietnam's communist government against South Vietnam and its main ally, the US. The ongoing #ColdWar between the United States and the Soviet Union exacerbated the issue. Over 3 million people were murdered in the Vietnam War, including over 58,000 Americans, and more than half of those slain were Vietnamese civilians. The Vietnam War was a protracted struggle between nationalist forces trying to unite Vietnam under communist rule and the United States trying to curb the spread of #communism. American leaders became embroiled in a war, many of which saw no chance of losing American public support for the war. Since the end of the war, the Vietnam War has become a measure of what not to do in all future American foreign conflicts. Conflicts took place in Vietnam decades before the outbreak of the Vietnam War. When Japan invaded parts of Vietnam in 1940, the Vietnamese suffered under French colonial rule for almost sixty years.
