Ultra-TELEPHOTO on 8x10 – Nikkor T*ED 720mm f16 – Toyo Field 810M Large Format 8x10 B+W Film

I've done a lot with ultra wides, it's time for some ultra TELEPHOTO... the Nikkor T*ED 720mm f16 lens. The lens has a front lens cell mounted in a Copal 1 shutter unit and three interchangeable rear lens cells to give 360mm f8, 500mm f11 and 720mm f16. Nikon's specifications for the lens rate the image circle at 210mm (5x7 inches) for all three configurations, however in reality the 500mm covers just over 280mm (6½x8½ inch whole plate) and the 720mm configuration covers just over 310mm which is enough for 8x10 inches with a few millimetres to spare. There is a lens for 8x10 large format longer than the 720mm. The Nikkor T*ED 600/800/1200 is one front cell mounted in a huge Copal 3 shutter with three interchangeable rear cells to give 600mm f9, 800mm f12 and 1200 f18. There are few cameras with 755mm of bellows extension needed just to focus on infinity, and a front standard strong enough to cope with the 1.6kg of weight. After this ULTRA-TELEPHOTO adventure I hope to keep the "ultra" theme going and make some images with an ULTRA-STANDARD lens. I'm not sure what that is yet, or what to do, so stay tuned: this could be the start of a new trend.
