Mini tour of Southampton's Greyfriars and God House Tower: The franciscan friars (Greyfriars) established a friaty in the community of Newtown outside the city walls in 1233 to care for the community and attend the sick and poor. The panels on the wall commemorate the friary as it's all in ruins now. It was excavated by local authorities in 1986. The Greyfriars provided Southampton with a very important contribution. In 1310 the built a water pipe froma near spring to give the community water "freely". By 1420 the local authorities acquire this and incorporated it into their systems creating the earliest urban water supply in England. The friary Gate was built in 1373 as the city walls cut off the community of Newtown with the main hub in Southampton. The friary was demolished as part of Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries in 1538. The site remained derelict until 1740 where the grounds were used for a sugar refinery which eventually closed down. Now it is a housing area. The remains of the city walls in the northern side of the city take us to God's House Tower which is part of the city walls. It used a cleverly designed ditch that would fill up with water during the high tide that would act as an extra layer of protection against attackers. The site takes its names from a nearby hospital. It used to be the town's armoury as well where the gunner lived and the guns were stores. In 1780 it became the town's prison.
