In the 1970s, Citroën decided to do something unusual. Instead of building another small car in Western Europe, the company chose to produce it behind the Iron Curtain - in communist Romania. This project became Oltcit. A joint venture between France and Romania. A Citroën sold under a different name. A car meant to be cheap, modern, and competitive. But it didn’t work. In this video, I tell the full story of Oltc - from its origins in the 1960s, through Cold War politics, economic compromises, quality problems, and finally, collapse. Why did Citroën go to Romania? How was the project supposed to work? And why did it ultimately fail? This is a story about cars, politics, and the limits of industrial cooperation during the Cold War.
